Claude Mythos Nears Launch: Fable 5 Surfaces

The 'claude-fable-5' identifier spotted on Microsoft Azure suggests Anthropic is preparing a public, safeguarded build of its flagship Claude Mythos.

Anthropic's flagship artificial intelligence model, Claude Mythos, appears poised for a wider public release. In early June, the appearance of a new identifier, 'claude-fable-5,' in the Microsoft Azure backend led developer communities to conclude that the public version of Claude Mythos has entered final testing ahead of an imminent launch.

Although the details of Mythos and its restricted preview phase have been documented previously (related article), this latest discovery points to a safeguarded build of Mythos, redesigned for general availability with enhanced safety protocols.

Deciphering the 'claude-fable-5' Identifier

The newly spotted identifier, 'claude-fable-5,' departs from the 'mythos-1-preview' naming convention by introducing the 'Fable' prefix. Industry observers interpret this as a public-facing version that maintains the core capabilities of Claude Mythos while incorporating stricter safety protocols.

This interpretation aligns with Anthropic's recent product strategy. When releasing Opus 4.7 in April, the company introduced automated safety systems designed to detect and block high-risk cybersecurity requests (CNBC). Anthropic has consistently maintained that deploying its most powerful models to the public requires prior validation of these safety guardrails.

Consequently, 'Fable 5' is widely viewed as a safeguarded build of Mythos, equipped with the safety frameworks established in Opus 4.7. However, because the identifier was only briefly visible in the Azure backend, Anthropic has not officially confirmed the model's release.

Signs of an Accelerating Release Timeline

Crucially, Anthropic has already committed to a broader release. In its recent Glasswing update, the company stated it intends to make Mythos-class models available to the general public once appropriate safety guardrails are established. That marks a shift from its previous policy of restricted access, and makes an imminent launch all the more plausible.

Other indicators also point to an imminent launch. The Mythos preview identifier was previously detected alongside 'opus-4.8,' which Anthropic subsequently released in late May. This suggests the company is executing a staged rollout of its updated model lineup.

Although Anthropic has not officially acknowledged 'Fable 5' or announced a release date for Mythos, the appearance of the new identifier in a production environment signals that an imminent launch of Claude Mythos is now in sight.
