Claude Tops Korea's Paid Generative AI Market

Claude passed ChatGPT in Korea's paid AI market with 49.5 billion won in March card payments. Sensor Tower shows it passing Gemini with top revenue growth.

South Korea's paid generative AI market has a new leader. Anthropic's Claude logged 49.5 billion won in domestic credit card payments in March, surpassing ChatGPT's 47.2 billion won for the first time, according to data from Hankyung Aicel, a data analytics service under The Korea Economic Daily.

The ranking is based on actual card spending rather than download charts, highlighting the significance of the shift. KED Global attributed the reversal to enterprise contracts rather than individual consumer popularity.

An Upset Driven by Corporate Cards

Corporate demand fueled the market shift. Anthropic opened its Seoul office in early 2026 — its third Asia-Pacific location — following a sixfold increase in South Korean usage over the preceding four months.

Major South Korean platforms are actively adopting the technology. Kakao plans to deploy the coding tool Claude Code to all employees by the end of May, while Naver has formalized a dual-stack approach, pairing ChatGPT for general tasks with Claude for software development. Yanolja, Woowa Brothers, and Kakao Mobility have also introduced Claude this year.

According to data from Menlo Ventures, Claude holds approximately 42% of the enterprise coding market share, double ChatGPT's 21%. This division of labor — where ChatGPT handles everyday administrative tasks and Claude is utilized for coding — is directly reflected in corporate credit card expenditures.

Sensor Tower Charts Reveal Claude's Ascent

This momentum extends beyond enterprise contracts to consumer mobile application metrics. According to Sensor Tower, Claude overtook Google's Gemini in South Korean iOS generative AI app revenue for the first time on March 23, and the gap has continued to widen.

On May 5, Claude reached an all-time high in South Korean daily app revenue at approximately $104,000, more than doubling its performance from the previous day. While it ranks second in year-to-date revenue behind ChatGPT, Claude leads the market in revenue growth rate.

Interestingly, app downloads remained flat over the same period. The revenue surge was driven by existing users converting to paid subscriptions or upgrading to premium tiers rather than new installations. Appfigures data supports this global trend, estimating Claude's monthly app revenue reached $92 million in May, a 26-fold increase year-over-year.

South Korea's contribution to this growth is substantial. From January 1 through June 5, South Korea accounted for 4.7% of Claude's global app revenue, ranking as its second-largest market behind the United States at 41.1%.

The Next Phase for South Korea's Generative AI Market

South Korea's standing in the generative AI market becomes clearer when examining how Claude is utilized. Sensor Tower Web Insights reveal that 58.8% of Claude users access the service solely via its website, significantly higher than ChatGPT's 22.0% and Gemini's 34.9%. This usage pattern indicates that Claude is predominantly used as a productivity tool within desktop browsers rather than as a mobile application.

The global trend reflects this shift. Forbes, citing Sensor Tower data, reported that Claude accounted for 14% of all AI app downloads in the second quarter of 2026, up from just 1% throughout 2025, while its monthly active users surged 627% year-over-year.

Although ChatGPT retains its leadership in consumer revenue both globally and in South Korea, the commercial momentum in Korea's generative AI market has shifted toward coding and enterprise applications. With Anthropic's valuation recently estimated at over $900 billion, the key focus moving forward is how quickly this enterprise demand will expand into the broader consumer market.
